Photonics Signal Reseach GroupWelcome to the web related to the Photonics Signal Research group here you will be able to get to know more about our research topics and you will be able to identify those you relate the most. Once you realize you are interested in our work It is possible to check our current member's background and contact data. The main interests of the group cover periodic structures, spectral analysis, time-frequency representations, time-space duality and in general signal processing applied to the photonics field. We are always open to new staff members who can expand our knowledge network and in diversify our study fields, besides the main fellows which are referenced in this web there are several Spanish Universities' researchers aligned with us. Much photonics research has a strong and clear link to applications, but it should never be forgotten that the study of light is the fundamental science behind all these amazing breakthroughs.Basic research is vital to the evolution of the field and as such needs to be supported. It is clear that basic research into the interaction of light with materials has brought great dividends. Examples that spring to mind include the study of liquid crystals and polymers, which have transformed the display industry through the creation of the LCD and more recently the organic LED. At the same time, research into the photorefractive effect and light-induced phase changes has had a significant impact on the optical-sensing a nd data-storage industries through the creation of fibre Bragg gratings and dense, rewritable disk-storage technologies, among other applications. Introduction to all-optical photonics signal processingOne of the most spectacular technological achievements of the last century has been the speed increasing and size reduction of electronic devices. Today, we have chips with billions of transistors, which can perform operations in picoseconds. However, chips developers are finding some fundamental limits of electronics. This limits can be overcome by quantum electronics, which is based on quantum mechanics principles applied to processing information. Nevertheless, this technology is still in a very beginning state of development. An immediate solution to overcome the fundamental electronics limits is the ultrafast all-optical processing of information, which has a great interest in very different areas, such as optical communications, metrology, sensing, image processing, optical computation, microwave engineering,The huge bandwidth and parallel processing capabilities of optical processing lead to speeds of processing several orders higher than electronics. Thus, an increasing interest of finding all-optical substitutes to electronics based devices for signal processing applications have arise. It is worth noting that all-optical signal processing cannot directly perform all the electronics applications efficiently, since they are very different approaches. Nowadays our group is focused in some state of the art research topics which include the following:
